What is the benefit of mechanical keyboards? Question

−2

I've heard people talk about how mechanical keyboards are better. But they seem to be much more expensive than regular ones ($100+). What is the benefit of using them over regular ones?

One big disadvantage of mechanical keyboards is that they come with more friction and a longer distance for the key to travel. Which means slower typing.

This actually makes them less suitable for gaming! Which is ironic since a lot of these are marketed as gaming keyboards. Of course this mainly matters in games where quick reaction or quick typing are essential, typically the 1st person shooters or RTS variety. But also in MMOs and the like, where for some reason you aren't using your head seat and need to relay information fast by typing.

I recently bought a new keyboard, tried 20+ gaming keyboards, all which felt great to use but made me type slower. Then after trying all of them, I settled for a cheap standard Microsoft one with low buttons. Simply because I can notice a significant improvement in typing speed when using it. I type nearly twice as fast with it compared to mechanical ones.

Now of course these rubber dome standard ones won't last as long and are overall of lower mechanical quality. But after a couple of years, a keyboards does start to become messy and they aren't easy to clean. Or when you eventually manage the classic spill of coffee all over it. So you might want to replace them after a couple of years for the mess reason alone anyway.

Not necessarily slower. (3 comments)
Corsair K100 Air

I may be going a bit off the rails here, but this is the shopping community proposal. I don't have a lot of experience using different keyboards, but I know one thing for sure: I absolutely cannot stand thick keyboards. I must have a flat one. I recently switched from a game-playing laptop to a desktop, and I picked out an old iMac 2007 keyboard for it. It works somewhat great, but it cannot handle enough keys at once, regularly causing me issues in games. That issue aside, it's still not as comfortable to the 2018 Acer Predator Helios 500 keyboard I was used to, nor a 2015 MacBook Air, or a 2021 Macbook Pro, although it's close. I'm considering buying the Corsair K100 Air, which seems to be the only "game" optimized keyboard at the market with low, flat keys. Have you by any chance tested that particular keyboard? Reviews on it differ, so I'm wondering what it's like to somebody who prefers flat keyboards. I did find one reviewer who loved it so much he replaced his kb with it.

Andreas witnessed the end of the world today‭ My testing such as it was, involved visiting a big electronics store with a "gamer" department, hitting the keys of every keyboard offered and dismissing pretty much all of them. All of them too slow for gaming or typing. Then I went to the office part of the same store and some cheap Microsoft low profile keyboard felt superior to anything "gaming".

For those who don't need to type fast and just want something durable, I can see the appeal of the "gaming" ones though. Surely they will handle a lot more operations at least. Back in the days I did manage to wear out some cheap keyboards from heavy use alone.

I personally don't like the Corsair brand since every product from them I've bought (one PSU and one headset) have turned out to be low quality trash.

Ah. I've also been to electronics stores for testing, but they have only a limited set of keyboards and mice at display, and the majority of them are just the generally cheap stuff, so trash quality, there. Only the online stores have K100 Air, and they're quite expensive, so I'm not able to test it. Guess I can return the keyboard after some time if I'm unhappy with it.

Game-playing keyboards can generally offer some qualities other keyboards can't, such as polling speed and the ability to handle many keys at once. That's kind of necessary for me. On the other hand, if the only other flat keys choice are the cheap non-game-playing keyboards, I'm better off just using this iMac keyboard.

Wonder if it's my Corsair PSU being faulty, and preventing my computer from turning on sometimes... Reconnecting the power cord helps.
