Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

How do I object to a community proposal?

Codidact is wide open to have any sort of community proposed. This means that any kind of proposal can also gain a significant backing from either new or existing members. However, that does not mean Codidact should be hosting the community. There may be various reasons why I would not like to see a community take shape and form, either weak or strong. If a community proposal is in direct breach of the CoC, it should suffice to flag it for a moderator to delete it, but the CoC has limited reach, does not, should not, and can not, cover every possible reason to object to a community.

Public objection

You can raise a discussion on either of:

  • Proposals Meta, if you believe that the presence of the proposal itself is a problem.
  • Codidact Meta, if you believe that either the proposal or the eventual community will have a detrimental effect on Codidact's other communities.

Private objection

You can raise a concern in private with either of:

  • A flag: If moderator attention is required you can flag the proposal description itself, adding details of your objection.
  • An email: If you have information that you believe Codidact should be aware of, but that you have reason to avoid posting publicly, you can also email, which allows for more space and flexibility than flagging. You can use whichever one of the addresses on the contact page you feel is appropriate.

How are objections judged?

How are objections judged? Does the Codidact staff get any special right to forbid a specific proposal/community? Does voting for them suffice? If voting, how do we ensure that the voting has been done in accordance with the values and goals of Codidact?

Objections on Meta will be open to community consensus.

If there is reason that community consensus would not be an appropriate way to assess the objection, that would be a decision for moderators or staff. For such cases, and for objections raised in private, I have no way of knowing how a decision will be made. In general, the Codidact Foundation decides whether to host a new community. I am not part of the Foundation so I have no knowledge of this. From the introductory blog post, the Codidact Foundation is a UK Community Interest Company - "a type of corporation that, by law, must operate for the public good".

If you're asking about internal voting within the Foundation, you'd have to ask them.

Bear in mind that the underlying software is open source, so a hypothetical community that the Foundation declines to host can still self-host, they just won't be listed in the Codidact communities.

Do self-hosting communities have access to use the Codidact brand, as to say their site is a Codidact community?

As far as I understand, no. The underlying software is called QPixel, and allows an organisation to add its own name.

I don't know if the Codidact name has any legal protections.
