What kinds of ice-melt are safe for young concrete? Question
We had a sidewalk and driveway replaced this summer (standard concrete sidewalk, nothing fancy). We've been told not to use salt for at least the first winter because it will damage the young concrete. Ice-melt isn't in season here now for me to check labels, but from past years I remember the packages being a little vague as to what's inside. What chemicals/compositions should I be looking for come winter to best avert damage? This is a public sidewalk, so it's important for us to be able to clear ice.
Our winters tend to have many freeze/thaw cycles, as opposed to getting cold and staying like that for weeks. Average monthly highs are in the 30s to 40s (Fahrenheit) and average lows are in the 20s (F), but sub-zero nights happen occasionally and single-digit temperatures are not that uncommon. Negative double-digit temperatures are very rare.
