Is the TITLE tag or the H1 tag more important for SEO? Question

I've heard that for good SEO you need both a <title> tag and an <h1> tag on each page. I have pages that are very visual, think full screen map or full screen images. I'm not sure that I have room in my site design for a heading tag. Could just a title tag suffice?

If I do have both, can I make the H1 tag significantly shorter than the title tag so that it takes up very little room?

I am very confused by what you're referring to by the title tag here.

If I do have both, can I make the H1 tag shorter than the title tag so that it takes up less room on the page?

The title tag does not appear on the page. It is what appears on the browser's tab for the page, so I'm not entirely sure what you mean here.

I'm not sure that I have room in my site design for a heading tag though. Could just a title tag suffice?

I am also extremely confused by what kind of site design doesn't have room for a heading tag - could you give an example of what you're trying to do?

I'm thinking of a full screen map page, for example. Where any additional text on the page would cover up part of the map and distract from user experience.
