Descriptions

Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Description

Questions about renovating, repairing, maintaining and building one's own home.

Topics

Topics covered would include:

  • Any questions pertaining to work on a personal home
  • Electrical work
  • Plumbing
  • Construction
  • Repair/maintenance of any other systems within a house or other dwelling
  • Questions about the Building Code as it applies to practical work
  • Questions about interior design
  • Homesteading and livestock kept for personal use

Exclusions

These topics or types of posts would be out of scope:

  • Purely legal questions regarding official compliance with building regulation (should go to a legal-focused section)
  • Purely financial questions, such as mortgage loans
  • Real estate investment
  • Questions about being a landlord or Airbnb operator
  • Questions about commercial real estate, such as hotels, business, corporate farms

Special Features

One potential category would be tool, material and style (of furniture, paint, house construction type) recommendations. Not sure yet if there is enough interest in this - I think we should wait to accumulate enough questions first.

Another idea is project showcase: A place to brag about finished projects.

Overlaps

  • Electrical engineering: Questions about wiring, electric appliances, safety
  • Arts & Crafts: Questions about various DIY remodeling
  • Legal (doesn't exist yet, but probably will): Questions about what is legally permitted/required in a given jurisdiction - should be off-topic on Home Improvement
  • Money/finance (doesn't exist yet, but probably will): Questions about mortgages, what kind of loan can be used for renovations, return on investment, budgeting - should be off-topic on Home Improvement

Terminology
Lundin‭ wrote 12 months ago

One thing we might want to consider allowing is terminology-related posts. It's hard for non-English speakers to give the proper names of electrical or plumbing components, even when they happen to be professionals themselves. What is incredibly helpful is to have a couple of terminology posts naming common parts that people may frequently ask about. Example from biking.stackexchange. Before launching I think we could create a bunch of "canonical" posts like that? Of a fuse box, a furnace, a tool box, a ventilation system or whatever else people might have frequent questions about.

I think that's a great idea!
