Descriptions

Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Philosophy: the Love of Knowledge

Site Name

Philosophy

Description

Philosophy is a highly general and fundamental subject which often inquires into the nature of intellectual inquiry itself. It addresses life’s “big questions”, often ones that have not yet spun off into specialized fields, such as reason, existence, understanding, knowledge, morality, meaning, being, the world, and the nature of things.

Topics

Topics covered would include:

  • metaphysics
  • logic
  • epistemology
  • ethics
  • ontology
  • the history of philosophy
  • the philosophy of science
  • the philosophy of mathematics
  • metaphilosophy
  • specific philosophers such as Kant, Lao Tzu, Simone de Beauvoir
  • analytic philosophy
  • continental philosophy
  • aesthetics
  • the philosophy of mind
  • the philosophy of language
  • information theory
  • feminist philosophy
  • political philosophy
  • sociology
  • cultural theories

Exclusions

These topics or types of posts would be out of scope:

  • pure mathematics (with no philosophical component)
  • literature
  • politics
  • psychology
  • any field which is already its own specialized domain

Special Features

Mathematical notation, including diagrams. Aspects of mathematics are integral to at least some strains of contemporary philosophy, including set theory, formal logic, theoretical computer science, abstract algebra and category theory.

Overlaps

Philosophy is interdisciplinary by its nature. It is a difficult - even philosophical - task of defining what “philosophy” even is; what its boundaries are; what its essential characteristics are. That said, it would likely suffice for moderators to determine intuitively when a question is or is not about “philosophy”.

There are certain topics which, if they are not accommodated by their own dedicated site, would do well to be included in a philosophy site, due to their fundamentally investigative, exploratory and analytical nature; for example, anthropology, sociology, and theology.

I was a highly active participant on Philoosphy SE who wants to move here and create a new type of philosophy site.

I tend between between expert and active user. I know a lot about philo topics, but not on a university level or something. But I am surely interested.
