Where do I get a high-quality, ergonomic mouse with a dedicated middle click button? Question

Where can I get a high-quality, ergonomic mouse with a dedicated middle click button?

  • I use "ergonomic" loosely, in the sense of "doesn't hurt to use all day". It doesn't have to have a special ergonomic design - just don't be as awful as many generic mice.
  • I hate having to click the mouse wheel for middle click, so I want to have additional buttons (often button 4/5 on the side) that I can remap to middle click.
  • By high quality, I mean that the mouse should stand up to heavy use for a reasonably long time (years).

Budget is not a constraint, but I resent overpaying for products where the price is obviously driven by a bloated marketing budget or gross inefficiencies in manufacturing.

"Dedicated middle click" or programmability?

I don't mind clicking the mouse wheel, but I am interested in the body of your post (and your answer). Do you want to change the title?

I'm happy to change it - I had trouble phrasing the title. As I see it, with mouse buttons there are 3 levels:

  1. Just the basic left/right click
  2. Middle click (wheel or dedicated middle button)
  3. Extra buttons that are almost never used by default by software (button 4, 5, 6... usually assigned to macros, F-keys, back/forward in browser, etc)

Most software supports middle click, OSes can handle it out of the box, and often it is impossible or very difficult to perform tasks without #2. But I haven't really seen a situation where #3 is necessary rather than nice to have. However, since many mice fulfill #2 with the mouse wheel, rather than an actual button, #3 becomes useful in that the extra buttons can be used as a middle button.

That's what I was trying to say here - I don't care about the extra buttons, except for being able to use them as a dedicated middle button.

But if you're trying to say that it would be a better question if it did not exclude mice with only 2 buttons and a wheel click - I feel like those are pretty easy to find, since it almost seems to be a standard thing these days. For me, since I want an extra button so I can remap middle click from wheel click, I end up funneled into gamer mice which is where the problem comes up.

I really have no objections to having another question to address 2-button mice specifically, though. Or maybe there's a way to phrase this to allow both things in one post? BTW feel free to suggest an edit, I'm not super attached to the exact way it's written.
