Rewrite rule or mod_proxy config for reverse proxy in Apache? Question

+1
−0

I looks like either

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) http://localhost:8080/$1 [P,L]

or

ProxyPass "/" "http://localhost:8080/"
ProxyPassReverse "/" "http://localhost:8080/"

would allow me to set up a reverse proxy from my Apache web server running on ports 80 (http) and 443 (HTTPS) to my back end web server running Tomcat that serves one specific domain with Java.

The first rule is based on mod_rewrite while the second is based on mod_proxy. Both look like they would do the right thing. Is there a technical reason that I should prefer one to the other?
