Descriptions

Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

GIS (Geographic Information Systems)

I am migrating a proposal from the old system on behalf of others. This post doesn't yet follow our template; it's a cut/paste so that people who actually understand GIS can have a starting point. Please edit freely!

This is a proposal for a community for questions on GIS and spatial analysis. I suggest that it be called either "GIS" or "Geographic Information Systems."

Questions and answers on the community would include both conceptual questions about what kinds of analysis can be done with GIS (e.g. "What analytical tools exist for identifying areas based on which feature is nearest?") or questions on how to complete mapping and spatial analysis tasks in specific software (e.g. "How do I generate voronoi polygons in QGIS?"), as well as questions on how to troubleshoot particular software.

Some programming tools (e.g. Python and R) have GIS capabilities, so there might be some overlap with the existing "Software Development" community, and it's possible that people equipped to answer general questions in GIS might not have ready answers for doing GIS in more coding-like environments, so this might require some thought.

I don't have a pre-existing group of people in mind who would use this community, but coverage of this topic would go a long way toward making Codidact a worthwhile substitute for the kinds of things I currently use StackExchange for. I use GIS and a number of other "data science" tools in my research and private projects, and have furthermore taught college level introductory courses in GIS since 2017. I would be prepared to answer many basic questions about GIS, but I also have a lot of my own learning to do.
