Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Minimum length of a proposed community name

+3
−0

The minimum title length here on Proposals Meta is 15 characters. This setting is adjustable per category. A Proposed community name may be shorter than this, so the minimum title length for a new proposal is 5 characters.

However, it seems reasonable to expect there to be communities that have a name that is shorter than 5 characters. The current limit would allow proposing a community called "Chess", but not a community called "Go". There is also an existing example: the proposed "Law" community has quotation marks in its name to work around this.

What should be the minimum number of characters for a proposed community name?

1 character

Unsuitable community names will already be dealt with by editing, or by flagging where this is insufficient. I see no reason to impose any particular minimum length. The board game "Go" seems a reasonable name, with only 2 characters. Allowing 2 characters but forbidding 1 seems arbitrary.

I suggest making the limit 1 character so the discussion does not need to be raised again if a shorter name is required. This effectively means there is no character limit, other than requiring the name be non-empty.
