Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Where is the large cook promotion? Question

The time is 8:59 or ...

3 x 3 fill in the blanks multiplication grid

Where is the large cook promotion?

Note: The correct answer to this puzzle is related to the numbers 3,4,2.

Spoiler! Click here to reveal a hint about filling in the grid. The phrase “The time is 8:59 or ...” is intended as a hint as to how to fill in the grid.

The time 8:59 can be read as 1 minute to 9 (or 1 to 9) meaning that the grid should be filled with all the numbers 1, 2, 3, ..., 9 using each number exactly once.

With this condition, there is only one way to correctly fill in the grid.

I think I solved it but I don't get it...

Solved.

Spoiler

First I thought this would literally be just multiplication and fill in the numbers. Then I came up with a solution that sated the equations but with duplicate numbers and that didn't get me far.

Then the 8:59 spoiler revealed that each number should be unique 1 to 9, in which the only correct solution is supposedly this:

2 9 7
3 8 5
6 1 4

Now replace these digits with letters of the alphabet like a common cipher:

123456789
abcdefghi

Solution: "big chef ad"

b i g
c h e
f a d

Grid filled in correctly.

Lundin‭ You have correctly filled in the grid. Now you need to find the large cook promotion hidden in the grid.

will.octagon.gibson‭ Finally found it, answer edited. This was all quite far-fetched overall :)

Lundin‭ Congratulations on solving this tricky puzzle!

will.octagon.gibson‭ Thanks! And btw you might want to check out the Puzzles site proposal and declare interest in the site by picking a reaction corresponding to what kind of user you'd be - it seems like you might fit "Active User" or "Subject Matter Expert". Getting a lot of such users together is the key to deciding when to launch a new site proper, outside the incubator.
