Incubator Q&A

Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

How accurate are the browser usage statistics at caniuse.com? Question

+3
−0

I want to exclusively use webp images on my website. I haven't used a browser that doesn't support them in years. However caniuse.com reports that over 3% of users globally can't load them.

webp browser support stats from caniuse.com showing 96.63% of users can view webp images

If it is accurate, I'll probably continue to use png and jpg for a while, I don't want to turn away 3% of visitors. However, this stat seems implausible to me, but is it possible that it is accurate?

In the comments, Moshi brings up the point that "all users" may have lower stats than "users tracked on caniuse." I'm not sure what that actually means, or where caniuse is getting their usage statistics for "all users" if it isn't from their own data.

Do note that caniuse specifically states that numbers may be lower due to some browsers not being tracked.

All users
Values will be lower due to browsers not tracked on caniuse.

All tracked
Only considers the browsers that are tracked on caniuse.

Tracked desktop
Only considers tracked desktop browsers.

Tracked mobile
Only considers tracked mobile browsers.

All tracked gives a percentage of 96.39% + 1.89% = 98.28% (full + partial support)
