Descriptions

Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Anti-consumerism

Site Name

Anti-consumerism

Description

Discussion of theory and practical advice for reducing the impact of consumerism in daily life. This often coincides with low-tech, primitivism, DIY, frugality, environmentalism and so on. However, the focus is practical advice on how to live a less consumerist lifestyle for those who are interested.

Topics

Topics covered would include:

  • Less consumerist alternatives to goods and services that have equal or better functionality
  • Less consumerist alternatives to goods and services that are not as good as the consumerist version, but might be worth it for ethical reasons
  • Advice on lifestyle changes to reduce dependence on consumerist systems
  • Environmental, social and economic impact of the manufacturing processes for common everyday consumer goods and services is on topic
    • Questions about the impact of specific companies or products are on topic
  • Examples of publications covering related topics:
  • Discussion of charities, non-profits, lobby groups, social or political movements primarily focused on anti-consumerism is on topic

Exclusions

These topics or types of posts would be out of scope:

  • High political/economical theory and critique should go on other sites, like politics or economics. For example, general discussion of communism or capitalism, without specifically focusing on consumerism in practice, is off-topic.

Special Features

  • Waste: Could be a special feature for questions about what to do with a specific type of waste. See also https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/291189
  • Company review: Q&A format focusing on the impact of a specific commercial entity.

Overlaps

Potential overlaps:

  • Home improvement
  • Great Outdoors
  • Personal finance (if we create one)
  • History
  • Politics
  • Economics
  • Recycling

I think there's value in having a section focused specifically on practical anti-consumerism discussion, because it's an interesting topic that benefits from peer discussion. The other sites would inevitably tend towards authorities such as established authors and theories that treat the subject in broad strokes. This site can be a place for discussing details.
