How to prevent power outages when rebuilding power lines? Question

When I want to extend my power lines, I first have to delete some so I can add a power switch. Sometimes I also have to delete entire power line sections so I can move them further out. But in realistic mode, you can't construct instantly, and while I wait for the switch or new line to be built by workers, the buildings nearby suffer power outages and cause all kinds of havoc. How do I get around this problem?

A good strategy is building the main power lines in a ring.

Suppose you have some power source, like the customs house connection or a power plant, and a single power transformer which will go to your neighborhood.

Build power lines in two directions out from the power source, and connect them both the transformer. This will create two redundant connections. Now, when you modify one connection, the other will still provide power, and you can do your construction without causing blackouts.

For larger cities, a good architecture is:

  • Large outer ring of high voltage (HV) power line segments connecting power sources and switches, surrounding your city. Do not do construction on more than one segment at a time!
  • More HV lines branching off the ring inwards, towards buildings.
  • HV branches are terminated with a transformer.
  • Medium voltage lines go from the transformers to medium switches or substations.
