Incubator Q&A

Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

If someone had vibration based superpowers how would their powers react underwater Question

I had an idea for a character who can emit very powerful vibrations. As I thought about the possibility of how this character's vibration powers would work I eventually started to wonder how would affect water let alone react while underwater. For a better idea let's say he's submerged in either a body of water the size of an Olympic swimming pool or the size of Lake eerie and the character in question can generate enough vibrational force to cause nation wide earthquakes and tear down buildings.

enough vibrational force to cause nation wide earthquakes ... how would affect water

It is probably impossible to move water around to the point where it would shake the land and cause widespread earthquakes. With enough power (way more than any current earthly creature could generate), you can make the water vibrate. However, those vibrations won't couple well to the land. Perhaps you can devise the right type of land with the right shape to capture enough vibrations from the water to feel the movement near the shore. However, mostly you get waves in the water, and possibly tsunamis if you use low enough frequency. However, at such low frequency, the displacement in the water needs to be large.

Again, this whole concept is really implausible. Instead of just making up random stuff and asking about it here, try applying at least a little physics to it first.

Ok so basically again it wouldn't really work that well ok, yeah I'm mainly just asking what happens when an object emits high frequency vibrations underwater since I know you can't exactly shake water and I looked online but found no real answers since everyone seems to say different things. Also I didn't know that detail about tsunamis I kind of figured it would either result in the water being pushed away or at least allow faster swimming or something like that.
