Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.
Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Question | — |
Why is a self-referencing hreflang required? I recently implemented `hreflang` tags in my website to tell search engines about content translations in several languages. I was very surprised to find that a self-referencing hreflang is required. Pretty much every guide I looked at had that advice. For example, A Guide to Understanding Self-... (more) |

Question | — |
Will improving my domain authority (DA) as measured by Moz help SEO? I've been working on improving my site's domain authority as reported by Moz in the hopes that it helps our Google rankings. I have some doubts about it though. Google won't be able to see Moz's computation of the domain authority. Does Google compute it for itself? If so, are there differences ... (more) |

Question | — |
Tagged "Webmasters" vs "webmasters" — tag sometimes hidden Some of the posts in Incubator Q&A are tagged `[Webmasters]` (with a capital `W`) and some are tagged `[webmasters]` (with a lower case `w`). The posts with capital letter in the tag have that tag show up in the questions list, where as posts with the lower case letter in the tag do not. Tag li... (more) |

A: When importing Creative Commons licensed content from another site, how to ensure that search engines won't penalize my site? Search engines don't want to index multiple copies of content. They prefer to index content at its original and official URL only. Search engines use shingling algorithms to detect duplicate and near duplicate pages hosted anywhere on the internet. Unfortunately, that means that mass importing con... (more) |

Question | — |
Can I ask Google to stop indexing every URL that isn't in my XML sitemap? I have an XML sitemap containing all the URLs that I want search engines to index. Unfortunately Google is indexing some URLs that are not in my XML sitemap. Is there a setting in Google Search Console to have Google index only the URLs that are in the XML sitemap and stop indexing any URLs tha... (more) |

In this case you don't even need your own security certificate on your origin server because Cloudflare can do the redirects without an origin server set up at all. I've written an answer with the steps required to set it up. (more) |

A: How do I configure Cloudflare to redirect my alternate domain name with HTTPS support? Cloudflare lets you add many domains and each will get their own free tier of service. Here is a screenshot of my Cloudflare account. Each of those domains is an alternate domain that has been configured to redirect: Cloudflare account websites After you add your domain to Cloudflare, you nee... (more) |

How did you tie the pencil to the string? I'd think you'd have to tie it pretty near the tip to ensure that the pencil doesn't wobble around and make your circle less than circular. (more) |

In my case I need the circle on the front of the plywood because I'm not cutting it out. Is there a way to attach the center of the makeshift compass without making a mark in the center with a tack or nail? (more) |

Question | — |
Can I use Selenium to automate CLS testing? I've been bitten several times by cumulative layout shift (CLS) issues with my website. I've found out about them when I view the reports in Google Search Console. We have a good set of tests for our website that we run on our staging server using Selenium. I was thinking it should be possible t... (more) |

Question | — |
How do I draw a perfect circle on a square of plywood? I'm working on a string-art project on a 3-ft square of plywood. It will have brass nails in a circle with different colors of string connecting the nails in a pattern. I'm trying to figure how I can draw large enough circle on the plywood. Aggregate 404 errors from log file on the Linux command line My web server is logging in combined log format and my host gives me SSH access to my server where the logs are stored. Question | — |
Can I get a list of broken links to my site from Google Search Console? I've been looking through Google Search Console trying to find a place where it shows me broken links to my site, but it may be that the information I'm looking for isn't available there. I've found the 404 error report, but it is a mix of URLs that are 404 for a variety of reasons: - External... (more) |
