I removed the word "choosing" based on this feedback. You are exactly correct about the types of questions that would be appropriate and those that would not. We don't want to give the wrong impression. "I want to make a website about X, which domain name do you suggest." would be off-topic due to ... (more) |

Although in my experience, users don't make that decision all that consciously. They ask on whichever site they stumble across first without knowing about the other site or taking the time to understand the nuances. (more) |

I want to avoid trying to define carve outs in site scope because questions could be asked on another site.
