Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Comment Post #289128 I believe the example I heard of involved the Rust programming language if that helps in searching online.

Comment Post #289128 I don't know the names off hand, but I believe there are automated projects already using large language models for development assistance in the following form: 1. Ask for code to solve a problem. 1. Ask for a solution if it does not compile. 1. Ask for problems with the code. 1. Ask for solut...

Comment Post #289128 Does the code have any distinguishing features? For example, is it indented or surrounded by backticks? If not, will the model include such features if you request them? This would allow extracting just the code part of the response. Would that be close enough to your requirement?

Comment Post #289134 I'm guessing you were not aware before this comment that this answer has a near identical version a few minutes earlier. It's easily fixed by deleting the other one (which is missing the last few paragraphs). However, it would also be interesting to know whether you remember any relevant inform...

Comment Post #289169 I'm glad you covered the case of plain outsourcing. That's definitely not my intention, but I was wary of setting a bad example to other game makers. For me personally, I'd expect that I'd be the only one answering questions on a game I designed for some time, until gradually enough expertise buil...

Question Can Tabletop Games Codidact be given as the support site for a board game?
If I design a board game, can I list Tabletop Games Codidact as a place to ask any questions? Does this depend on whether the game is free or paid for? Does this depend on whether the game is open or proprietary? I imagine there is a difference between saying "Here is a site where you may find ...

Comment Post #288991 I did get to "pencil" and still didn't realise my mistake, as it said it could be replaced with a needle. Then I got to "marking knife" and just thought "I had no idea there were so many things that could be magnetised to make a compass". I clearly need sleep...

Comment Post #288991 I'm guessing you want something more sophisticated as you mention woodworking tools, but here's an instant compass recipe (the only non-wooden ingredients are a needle and water): 1. Slice a shallow disk from the end of a bottle cork. 1. Push a magnetised needle through it along its diameter. 1....

Comment Post #288802 Thanks for the suggestion! I got some foam dice to test, and they are almost silent, which is perfect. In the quantity I wanted (200) they were more expensive than the cheapest acrylic dice I could find of similar size though. Still a strong contender.

Comment Post #288837 It's not just the answers, the voting will be different too. Votes from a community of game devs may put a different answer at the top than votes from a general programming community.

Comment Post #288837 I don't see a fuzzy overlap as a problem. I'll ask in Software when I have a general programming question, and I'll ask in Video Games when I want the input of game developers specifically, as their perspective may be different even for the same question. In the same way, questions on Collab would...

Comment Post #288837 When considering scope, rather than asking "would this question be on topic on software.codidact.com?" I'd prefer to be asking "do I want the view of game developers specifically?".

Comment Post #288837 For example, it seems strange to have a community that welcomes game developers but excludes questions about graphics libraries. That seems to narrow the community down to "game engine users" rather than general game developers (who may or may not be using a game engine).

Comment Post #288837 I would see a question as off topic if it is not related to game dev, but a lot of questions that game devs have will not be *unique* to game dev. Ruling out questions that are not unique to game dev seems to narrow the scope more than needed. In particular, the person asking the question is likel...

Comment Post #288802 I tried acrylic trays, which were very loud, and then a less rigid plastic tray, which is not as bad but still quite loud. I feel there needs to be some kind of tray as otherwise the chance of 1 of the dice rolling off the table is high. Also, different dice are used each turn. The tray makes it m...

Question Quiet dice on a budget
I'm designing a board game that involves rolling several dice simultaneously each turn (usually between 1 and 20), and in testing I found that this is surprisingly loud. I'm aiming to keep the game reasonably cheap to make, so my first thought was to try to find a material that is affordable, dura...

Comment Post #288796 I hadn't thought of table tennis. Now that you mention it, it also brings to mind snooker/pool/billiards and the grey area surrounding them. There are games using dice but that are about rolling them to land in scoring zones rather than just which way up they land, and they can be used to knock rival...

Comment Post #288625 I understand not wanting questions on piracy that are asking how to circumvent a game's protections. What about questions from a game developer about implementing piracy protections? These could be questions about the technicalities of implementing, or about the practicalities - cost/benefit analy...

Comment Post #288455 Being on topic in 2 places doesn't mean it has to be asked in both places. It also doesn't hurt if it is asked in both places. The benefit of having separate communities for different subject areas is that voting and feedback from a narrower collection of experts is more useful, and answers will b...

Answer A: Tag collision between proposals
Definitely a problem I don't see this as a problem for filtering posts. If I filter by the proposal tag and the clashing tag, then I will only see posts with the clashing tag for that proposal, not the other proposal. Where I see more of a problem is when people want to add the tag wiki and the w...

Comment Post #288455 Being on topic in another community doesn't necessarily make something off topic in this one - a few of the existing communities have overlaps. If you think that software development questions should be off topic here, it's worth raising that as a separate question to get a discussion going and see w...

Comment Post #288455 I agree with both your points. As for the proposed name "Web Developers", I wonder whether that would sound like only the code side of looking after a website. To me personally, "Webmasters" also sounds narrow - it would make me think of only the operations side and not the code side. As the sc...

Question What should the "webmasters" site name and url be?
When SE's webmasters community was just starting out, they had a [Meta discussion about what the site name should be]. Although they settled on "webmasters", some of the arguments given at the time may no longer apply today. For example, Bing still uses the term webmaster tools, but [Google appear...

Comment Post #288368 I like this idea of users choosing which community they want an answer from, rather than a question having only one "correct" home. Intuitively, I'd also expect it to be better to start a new community with a scope that is slightly too broad rather than slightly too narrow. My guess is that gradua...
