A: Home Improvement: Is it necessary to expand acronyms like OSB? My thoughts are already apparent in the question body, but I will also add this: It is inevitable that many new users will not bother to read the details of our style preferences. It is certainly common on the Internet at large and in general parlance to use such acronyms without expanding them. P... (more) |

Question | — |
Home Improvement: Is it necessary to expand acronyms like OSB? There are some acronyms related to home improvement that are very well known: OSB, MDF, PVC. Most people who know the material they refer to, know the acronym. In fact, I would guess that a lot of people know the acronym but not what it stands for. On a board about home improvement, it would be te... (more) |

> I would not expect to see it in a house except in an unfinished basement, garage or workshop - any place else it will normally be covered with something else, at a minimum primer + paint.
This is why in the question, I stated that it *will* in fact be left uncovered, and I am asking specifically... (more) |

The question is asking about OSB specifically because my interest is in OSB specifically. Indeed, similar questions can be asked about plywood and other materials which also contain formaldehyde or similar chemicals. If anyone would like to know the same about plywood or something else, they are welc... (more) |

Question | — |
Alternatives to engineered wood wall sheathing In North America, it is common to build wood-frame houses with pieces of lumber making up the frame and OSB boards acting as wall sheathing. The OSB sheathing reinforces the frame against various skew forces, such as may be created by strong winds. It also provides a surface that supports other el... (more) |

Question | — |
What is "strength axis" on OSB boards? OSB boards often have a stamp that says "strength axis" with an arrow, usually parallel with the longer dimension of the board. What is this strength axis? Should it be parallel or perpendicular to supporting joists? Why does OSB have a strength axis? I thought the point of OSB was supposed to be ... (more) |

Question | — |
Calculating load for OSB flooring I have a 1/2in OSB board with "32/16" stamped on it. This means that when used as flooring, it the supporting joists must be spaced 16in or denser (32 is for roofing). However, if I did put it on 16in spaced joists, what load would it actually be able to carry in pounds? (more) |

Question | — |
What is the blue dye on edges of OSB boards? Oriented strand boards (OSB) are often sold with a blue dye on the edges: Imagealttex What is this? I'm assuming it's some kind of chemical protection. Does that mean that when you cut the board and leave an un-dyed edge, it is vulnerable to something? (more) |

Question | — |
Is it worth taking steps to reduce harmful vapors from OSB boards? Suppose I want to use OSB for a home renovation project. The OSB will be permanently attached in a habitable part of the house. It will be exposed directly to the room, without any coating, films, or anything else covering it. Does this type of usage pose a risk of exposing people in the room to h... (more) |

I think it wouldn't be crazy to absorb AI tech into this. Some more details [here](https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/289196). The only thing is that currently some things in AI tech are on topic, which are off topic here (eg. prompt engineering). (more) |

Question | — |
Broaden the scope of AI tech into all ML? I created the AI tech proposal primarily because I thought it would be good to have a place to discuss doing stuff with AI models rather than the details of how they are trained and how they work. Also, LLMs and prompt engineering appear to have become a bit of an odd duck in technical discussions. A... (more) |

A: Experiment: indicating interest and expertise This is cool, I'm curious to see how the experiment will turn out! I've thought about bringing up this kind of thing before. That's hard to say - I'm not actually very experienced with such models. The training time-computational resource curve can often be complicated because of the impact of things like specific hardware architecture and memory available.
I would say that anything up to a few days or even weeks is rea... (more) |

Also, as far as I know, all of the models I'm thinking of are also neural nets with many layers. However I'm not sure if it's good to scope things to neural nets, because other architectures may be developed in the future. Also, smaller neural networks (such as classical 3-layer architectures) would ... (more) |

My goal with this is to focus specifically on sophisticated AI models that have very broad capabilities, as opposed to being purpose trained for a specific task. The contrast is that in "traditional ML" one identifies a task, gathers training data specific to it, designs and tunes a bespoke model for... (more) |

Question | — |
How can I give an AI sandboxed file access? I want to give an AI the ability to read, write and manipulate files on my computer, such as with the OpenAI function calling feature. A: What resources are available about prompt engineering? Dair.AI maintains a free prompt engineering guide. There is also another similar project which is structured as a course. There is also a literature review from March 2023 which is more technical in nature. The Wikipedia article on the topic is also quite comprehensive. (more) |

What computational resources are needed to train GPT-NeoX? GPT-NeoX is provided as open source software which you can train yourself: https://github.com/EleutherAI/gpt-neox What are the hardware requirements like for training this model within a reasonable timeframe? Ideally, a few hours, but up to a month is reasonable, I think. (more) |

Question | — |
How to get back only code from ChatGPT responses? I want to use ChatGPT to edit individual source code files. When I give it the file and state what changes I want, it tends to do those quite well, but it's also very chatty and includes a lot of explanation that I don't care about. Is it possible to get just the code in my responses? (more) |

Question | — |
How to receive responses incrementally from OpenAI API? Sometimes responses from the OpenAI API are large and it takes a long time to receive them. During this time the program appears to hang since there is no output. Is there a way to incrementally receive the response in small parts, instead of waiting for the whole response? (more) |

Question | — |
Is it possible to write a book with GPT-3? The context window of various GPT-3 models is given as 4-16k tokens. One token corresponds to about 0.75 words of English text. However, if an average book is 64k words, the GPT-3's context is far too small to handle such a task. Is it possible to use GPT-3 to generate entire books? (more) |
