Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.
Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

A: What could be a believable reason for technologically advanced underground people to not notice the end of surface war for hundreds of years? If they are acting rationally, it's not possible. It is only logical for them to monitor the progress of the situation that was bad enough to force them to move underground. Even if society was largely uninterested in topsiders, there would be researchers, adventurers, daredevils, outcasts and crimin... (more) |

A: What's the least traumatic way to integrate resurrected historical humans into modern society? > The past is a foreign country. The people resurrected from the past are much like people immigrating from undeveloped countries into developed ones. Especially the way these immigrants were in past years, when communication technology was less advanced and cultural differences were larger. An ex... (more) |

Question | — |
What are the pros and cons of direct vs indirect conflict resolution? Occasionally a situation develops in a community of people where two members come into some personal conflict. Let's suppose that neither member is doing anything particularly against the community's established rules of conduct, but they happen to clash in a way that's causing issues. There are t... (more) |

@#8046 Thank you - feel free to edit more if you like, I'm not opposed to it.
I have nothing against adding links or more information, but this seems akin to pointing out that "plastic is organic too". "Mechanical keyboard" is what everyone calls it. Even Wikipedia, despite the handwringing on htt... (more) |

Where is that quote from? Android@SE? That seems like a strange rule. If you're going to have a site for Android specifically, the reality is that Android devs are going to provide a lot of the deeper answers because they have to learn the inner workings of the OS to do their dev. So by having a plac... (more) |

In my exeprience, *usually* mechanical keys have more resistance. But there's a lot of different switches these days, and some are softer - there's probably some out there that are just as soft as a regular one. (more) |

What is the benefit of mechanical keyboards? I've heard people talk about how mechanical keyboards are better. But they seem to be much more expensive than regular ones ($100+). What is the benefit of using them over regular ones? (more) |

Probably to mimic https://android.stackexchange.com/. But I agree that it may be better to let those two cover Android until the userbase is much larger. (more) |

A: Scope discussion for Sports There are two obvious ways to set the scope: Physical sports only, or anything competitive. Physical sports only: This would pretty much exclude all overlaps. You might miss out on some "came to discuss competitive starcraft, stayed for the soccer questions" people. But if creating proposals conti... (more) |

A: Why are many bond ETFs just like a worse-performing S&P? This is a "recent" phenomenon. If you look back to 1900, bonds have a lower return on average, but in stock drawdowns they maintain a positive performance. Around 2000, they became correlated. Coincidentally, the question was prompted by looking at the past 20 years of data. I saw some literatu... (more) |

Question | — |
Why are many bond ETFs just like a worse-performing S&P? There is a common notion that bonds and stocks hedge each other: When business is not going well, companies borrow money to make up for sales and investments drying up, and government (especially Keynesian) tends to intervene with public works (paid for by borrowing money from the public) in a bid to... Question | — |
What is the impact of potential cap gains exposure for a retail ETF investor? Apparently, ETFs have a "potential cap gains exposure" in that, when the ETF buys and sells some underlying asset, it is subject to capital gains tax. Supposedly, this leads to things like buying an ETF, and losing money on taxation of capital gains that occurred before you bought the ETF yourself. ... (more) |

Yeah, it looks like if you want much less than 1 USD/die, it would be hard to do it with custom. I think a custom die seller would not want to sell them at 0.1 USD each, because then they would only make money from bulk orders - you'd have to sell a lot of 100 just to cover one hour of a minimum wage... A: How do I search for d6 dice with a blank 6th face? I don't know about the terminology, but a lot of Warhammer (Games Workshop) dice have a special design on the 6th face. This is not the same as a blank, but it could serve your goal of emphasizing the 6s (Warhammer also likes to emphasize the 6, which is why the dice are made this way). For exampl... (more) |

Indeed - in fact many other ancient (Athens) and Medieval (Europe) societies had such a situation. They had a legal system, courts, lawyers but not something readily identifiable as akin to modern police as we understand it. (more) |

> In a modern democracy, the police is not separated from the courts.
I think this incorrect. They have very different functions, governance, mandates and means of acquiring staff. The separation is even more pronounced in a modern democracy due to separation of powers. (more) |

Question | — |
What is the point of police? Philosophically, what role does police serve in society? Today, virtually every society has a police force. So, it seems like there must be some compelling reason to have one, i.e. police must serve some unique and critical role in society. But historically, police forces in the modern sense we... (more) |

Question | — |
Do laws matter without police? Do laws only matter if there is a police force enforcing them? Police in the modern sense is a recent development. Before the 19th century, police forces as today were very rare. But people have made laws since antiquity. What is the point of having a law, if there is no police to make people foll... (more) |
