Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Comment Post #288871 Many household electrical devices are designed to do something when there is *current*, not voltage. So again, if the lighbulb is on, it's obvious you shouldn't stick your fingers in it. But if it's off, does that mean it's okay to stick your fingers in? You are correct that a contact pen would...

Comment Post #288881 The idea of asking outdoors stuff on the Outdoors section sounds reasonable. And since we already have "Outdoors", maybe we can just try asking those questions there, and see how it goes? If it works out, we can scope "home improvement" to "the actual home only, not the garden" and say all garden rel...

Comment Post #288865 Thanks for the response! Regarding organizing closets, pantries and so on - definitely agreed that I would regard it as on topic. My only concern would be to phrase it clearly in the site description :)

Answer A: Electrical switches: Does it matter which wire it's on?
The switch will work either way. However, there are significant safety benefits to installing switches on the hot wire. For residential AC in the United States, only one wire actually has a potential difference (the "hot" wire, usually red or black) while the other wire is neutral (usually gray or...

Question Electrical switches: Does it matter which wire it's on?
Most everyday electrical wiring has two wires, usually one white and one black/red. When installing a switch, does it matter which wire I put the switch on?

Question How to finish a wood while preserving its natural scent?
Port Orford Cedar is a type of lumber which naturally emits a pleasant aroma. I'd like to make some wooden crafts with this wood, because the wood itself seems nice and I really enjoy the smell. However, I would like to finish the wood to ensure its longevity. What technique can I use to preser...

Question Are questions about selling one's crafts allowed?
Should questions about selling one's crafts be on topic? It seems common for people in the crafts community to sell their creations online (on sites like Etsy) and offline (in fairs, festivals and similar events). Historically, making crafts for sale was obviously a major interest for craftsmen. ...

Question What does "wall fishing" mean?
I've heard the term "wall fishing" in the context of interior wiring of a house. What does this mean?

Question What is this electrical/ethernet conduit on the wall and how do I repair it?
My house has some conduits put in by previous residents. The conduits are plastic enclosures running along walls, which contain electrical outlets as well as ethernet plugs (actually it also has RH45 for landlines, but I don't care about those). Presumably, they wanted to have ethernet throughout the...

Answer A: Home Improvement versus a more general "home stuff" community?
I created https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/288863 but I was not trying to set the agenda - I was merely trying to reproduce what the author of https://meta.codidact.com/posts/288095 intended (as far as I could tell) but following the new format more closely. My 2 cents is: Generally speaki...

Comment Post #288863 I migrated this from https://meta.codidact.com/posts/288095 because the original poster didn't and I'm interested in the proposal. I will be making edits over time to improve the format, but if the original proposer wants to take over, I'm happy to let them.

Comment Post #288704 I'd love to narrow it down, but many things you bring up are already out of scope. For example, in my question I said >So, for example, "hash the passwords of your users in the DB" should not be part of the answer because not all sites have user accounts. Thus, SQL injection, passwords, databa...

Comment Post #288625 Actually that was not something I put in - it's from the original post I copied. I don't personally have a strong opinion on this. Maybe the best way to deal with this is to ask a question in the Meta section and tag it? [Like this](https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/288634)

Question What security best practices are applicable to any public website?
Let's say I want to host a public website, for use by anyone on the internet. I am deliberately leaving the exact nature of the website vague, because I want to ask for general things that are applicable to any person serving HTML over the public internet. What security best practices should be fo...

Comment Post #288519 I think it helps if you're more specific. What do you seek to gain by keeping the site up after you're dead? Is it to provide income for your progeny? That is normally done by incorporating a business around the site, and having an estate or trust run it. Is it to etch your work in history? That woul...

Comment Post #288673 Thank you for the well thought out response! I personally disagree in that I'd rather not see titles, as an aesthetics thing. But for this, I care more about what the community is happy with than my personal preference. I didn't realize the game tag was hidden. Nice find! That alone is a strong ar...

Answer A: Is it possible to set up a website that will last for 100 years, paid in advance?
I don't think this is realistic. How many companies still honor contracts from 1923? There's no way to guarantee that it will survive through all the possible mergers, acquisitions, bankruptcies, wars, and countless others calamities. If you are doing periodic renewals, it would be difficult to...

Answer A: Should the game name be included in the title?
For sample questions I asked, I elected to avoid the question in the title. My reasoning: It is redundant because the tag is already there If you clicked on the tag, you would get a list of questions with much repetition, which is aesthetically not nice On Software Development, we don't put t...

Comment Post #288625 Great question! It was more personal preference, but I think it's worth discussing at the proposal stage. I asked https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/288666, I'll post a self-answer shortly. Feel free to answer with your own thoughts if you want.

Question Should the game name be included in the title?
When questions in Video Games are about a specific game, should we expect askers to put that game's name in the title? Or is it enough to merely tag it with that game.
