Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Comment Post #289082 This sounds like it should just be a tag within https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/289081. There is a lot of overlap and it will be difficult to define the exact boundary. Also, currently there is not much activity on Codidact, so I think broad is better than focused. If the Finance site gets ma...

Answer A: Should I buy down my mortgage rate?
If you assume the value of money will not significantly change over the course of the loan, it is normally better to buy down rates as much as possible. This is similar to how a larger down payment is better - borrowing and repaying later is more expensive in the end than just paying now, because you...

Question Should I buy down my mortgage rate?
Some lenders offer an option where one can pay additional money in closing costs to get a lower APR. This is often called a rate or point "buy down". Is this a good idea?

Comment Post #289095 I meant stuff like this: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/new-income-ranges-for-ira-eligibility-in-2021 It sounds like you're not "eligible" if you make over 140k, so does this mean you get nothing out of the IRA at all?

Question Income tax when selling a house
When an ordinary person sells their house in the US, what happens to their tax situation? Usually, houses sell for half a million and up, and considering also regular (ie. salary) income, this would put one's income at a very high level for that year. Since the government taxes around 40% at higher b...

Question What income groups benefit from IRAs?
In the United States, there are various IRAs intended to help ordinary people save for retirement. It appears that generally, one funds these accounts and purchases securities with the funds. In exchange for not withdrawing money until some late age, the government forgives some or all of the income ...

Comment Post #289081 I contributed to money@SE, and I'm happy to help with this effort. If you have the time, please create some example questions in the Incubator to get the ball rolling, and I'll be happy to post answers where I can.

Comment Post #288863 Well the second paragraph sounds good to me - by the way, I think you are already required to add at least one tag. Although often people fill that requirement with a topic tag, not a location tag. I guess it seems strange to ask a question tagged only with a location. There is also a common situa...

Comment Post #289065 The question of defaulting to Incubator Q&A seemed kind of a tangent to me, so I created https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/289066 to cover it.

Comment Post #289065 Thanks for posting the reasoning for the current approach! I think that makes a lot of sense, especially in context of planned features. This makes sense to me - I think based on this the posts are better than tags after all.

Comment Post #289063 Now that I think about it, tag descs are shown in a hover card sometimes, right? A long proposal description probably wouldn't work well with that.

Comment Post #289063 1. That would be great if no one objects! I created a question for it in case anyone wants more discussion: https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/289066 I am of course voting for :) 2. You're right - the description itself is not duplicated. Currently proposal tags are either empty or say "look at ...

Question Incubator Q&A should be the default landing page for Proposals
"Incubator Q&A" should be the default landing page when users go to `proposals.codidact.com`. The idea here is that whenever you propose a site, you can post some questions (and answers) to Incubator Q&A as examples of what type of content the proposed site will have. Not only does this help peopl...

Answer A: How do I build a wooden compass?

Answer A: Use tags instead of posts to describe sites?
I don't know the technical constraints on tags in terms of implementation, but as a matter of UX I think proposal are a better fit for tags. The current model of using posts (which appear similar to questions, but without the answer) provides some features that proposal don't really need: Comm...

Comment Post #288863 I'm all for adding location tags where it's relevant. For example, asking about wiring requirements for the US as you point out. Something that I find annoying about diy.SE though (in fact, more so than missing location), is when location is obvious and/or doesn't matter, some people come in and b...

Question How viable is generic SEO in 2023?
I recall that back in the dark ages of web search (Altavista), search engines were naive and keywords were a huge thing in SEO. People would even create landing pages stuffed with keywords in tiny, transparent text to get higher rankings. When Google first came on the scene the revolution was that...

Question How to fix spade bits wobbling in drill press?
I have a cheap drill press and a set of cheap spade bits. Some of the spade bits wobble, the tip makes a circle of as much as 5 mm in diameter for some of them. Others wobble less, 1-2 mm. Since they don't all equally wobble, I suspect the problem is the bits not the drill press. Also, I have some...

Question How do I build a wooden compass?
How can I make my own compass out of wood? (I mean the drawing tool, not the direction-finder.) Ideally, I'd like something that: Handles diameters from 3 in to 2 ft Has minimal non-wooden parts like screws Light duty but shouldn't fall apart after a handful of uses Can change the penci...

Comment Post #288866 Well, this raceway goes around 3 walls of a single room. The adjacent rooms do not have such a raceway. But I was surprised to discov...

Comment Post #288866 Looks like the well where the ethernet/phone jacks are has "Wiremold" embossed on it. Incidentally, that brand comes up with your search term, so thanks! Comment Post #288891 Have you done much shopping for this? I wonder if there are solar installers that offer a discounted bundle for panels + electric, or if there are government subsidies like tax credits that would be useful, or roofers that offer any promotions.

Comment Post #288891 After shopping around a bit, I got a generator that can do ~3kW (that's the usable power, forget what exactly they call it) for about $300. Question What are the drawbacks of leaving wood unfinished?
I've mostly worked with pine wood, because it's cheap and easy to work with. I've had some projects where I finished it (polyurethane coat, sometimes a stain) and other projects where I didn't (just sanded and called it a day). After a few years, the unfinished pieces seem to be doing okay. They g...
