Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.

Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Question Do laws determine societal norms, or vice versa?
When society creates laws to govern themselves, do they simply codify what has already been established practice in society? For example, when a law is written that forbids theft, is this because stealing was already unacceptable in that society, and they simply decided to write it down now? Or ar...

Comment Post #289606 Thank you for the answer. I think the part about *quality* is exactly addressing the question I had. However, the focus of the answer is on testing *wiring* which was not what I intended to ask about. >Some can do even more quality testing, which may be helpful if you have a connection that works ...

Answer A: Book recommendations on intentional community building
Wikipedia's article on intentional communities has a short list: Creating a life together, Diana Leafe Christian - Amazon reviews seem good, and the blurb says it is a "how to"... Although it also makes the claim of being the only resource like this, which is contradicted by the rest of this list...

Comment Post #291388 I created the communities proposal, and I just wanted to add IMO this is exactly the sort of question that should be in it. Not sure why there's downvotes, too bad they didn't leave a comment... Of course, just because I originally made the proposal, doesn't give me any sort of special status for ...

Comment Post #289913 I mean that, if you want to ask about organizing the Codidact community, that's a special case and it should be on the Codidact Meta. I was just trying to resolve the potential overlap.

Comment Post #289594 I was not aware that this is significant. Currently, they are male-male. I also wasn't sure if the "patch cable" is something special, or just the regular type of ethernet cable. So it sounds like I have a "pile of patch cables" as you put it. Do you think this is the issue? If I go to solid wire,...

Comment Post #291416 Posting as a comment because I don't feel like doing a literature review. They don't reason. They produce text that fits certain patterns. Internally, the model is a neural networks, with most nodes dedicated to analyzing and generating semantically coherent text. A lot of what we humans inform...

Answer A: Can I set up a regular machine like the Steam Deck?
The Steam Deck uses a customized Arch with KDE and Wayland. The "gaming mode" is basically Steam running in Big Picture mode, but it uses the minimal window manager gamescope to avoid running the heavy KDE UI which you don't use while gaming. The "desktop mode" is just straight up Arch with KDE and s...

Question One cert with many domains, or one domain per cert?
I've noticed that it's possible to use `DNS Name` multiple times, so that a TLS certificate will cover multiple domains. Alternatively, you could generate a separate cert for each domain. What are the implications of choosing one approach or the other, in terms of security and maintainability? ...

Comment Post #291189 While that is true, I was thinking more in terms of "what's right" than "what's required". I think in many places, the actual requirements on waste are quite loose (especially for residential/individuals as opposed to commercial) and even when they're more elaborate they rarely seem to be enforced mu...

Question What can I do with used disposable batteries?
What can I do with used up disposable batteries, such as AA/AAA? It used to be that these had to be separated so they can be put through a special remediation process. However, apparently that was driven by heavy metals used in the batteries, and nowadays they don't use the heavy metals anymore, s...

Answer Recycle
Site Name Recycling I opted for this name because everybody knows what it is and gets the idea. It is also easy to think of a logo for it :) However, you're supposed to try to first reduce, then reuse, and only after recycle. Hopefully site culture can reinforce that notion, to counteract the sit...

Comment Post #291154 Interesting point! I read *Species*, albeit a long time ago, it's an interesting book but I don't recall if he grounded everything in general philosophy or restricted himself to biology alone. Victorian writings seem like they're often eclectic with their philosophies. This is a great illustration...

Question Can you always interpose an intermediate effect into any causal chain?
Consider the following claim: >In any causal relationship X -> Y, it is always possible to find an intermediate effect A such that X -> A -> Y. This is a claim about nature, not our currently available scientific theory about it. So for example even if current physics claims a neutron decays di...

Comment Post #290961 I think there's multiple questions here: 1. Correlation vs. causation 2. Feedback loops masking causation 3. Unintended consequences 4. Question How does science generalize local results to global scale?
Science tends to discover knowledge by performing experiments in the lab. For example, suppose we have a hypothesis that a volume `V` of atmospheric air, when compressed quickly to a certain ratio, will heat up by a temperature difference `dT1`. The experiment is straightforward, and let's say it ...

Question How does climate change research establish causality?
How does climate change research establish causality? For example, when it is said that human activity causes global warming, what sort of logic is used to justify this claim? Comment Post #291116 I've always felt like the most comfortable mouse for me is heavy and large. On the weight, you are probably right. Comment Post #291115 But if you're trying to say that it would be a better question if it did not exclude mice with only 2 buttons and a wheel click - I feel like those are pretty easy to find, since it almost seems to be a standard thing these days. Comment Post #291115 I'm happy to change it - I had trouble phrasing the title. As I see it, with mouse buttons there are 3 levels: 1. Just the basic left/right click 2. Answer A: Where do I get a high-quality, ergonomic mouse with a dedicated middle click button?
The mouse market is divided into two main areas: Cheap, no-name brand mice that are very low quality and hard to use "Gamer mice" which are premium-priced, use high quality parts, attempt (with varying success) to consider ergonomics in design, and have a lot of flashing RGB lights There are...

Question Where do I get a high-quality, ergonomic mouse with a dedicated middle click button?
Where can I get a high-quality, ergonomic mouse with a dedicated middle click button? I use "ergonomic" loosely, in the sense of "doesn't hurt to use all day". It doesn't have to have a special ergonomic design - just don't be as awful as many generic mice. I hate having to click the mouse whee...

Answer A: Is the historical method a scientific method?
The scientific method is not the mainstay of historical research. As a rule, history deals with events of the past. This is not just in the broad sense of them happening temporally in a past time, but in the narrow sense that they are by definition events that are inextricably grounded in their hi...

Question How do I find a good dumb TV?
A lot of TVs on the market these days are "Smart TVs" which I don't want. I've had smart TVs in the past and found that I don't use any of their features. Further, the software is often laggy, buggy and gets in the way. Moreover there are concern about privacy and ads. When shopping for a new TV, ...
