Welcome to the staging ground for new communities! Each proposal has a description in the "Descriptions" category and a body of questions and answers in "Incubator Q&A". You can ask questions (and get answers, we hope!) right away, and start new proposals.
Are you here to participate in a specific proposal? Click on the proposal tag (with the dark outline) to see only posts about that proposal and not all of the others that are in progress. Tags are at the bottom of each post.

Regarding the odds of getting an answer, firstly the incubator makes it easy to retag questions with a different topic.
Second, I think asking about types of home renovation contractors would be out of scope for a language site. (more) |

I don't think it would be unnatural. The question has to be in English, so that users can understand what's going on. But there's nothing stopping people from providing the local language term in the answer.
As an example, Stack sites like DIY, Money, Law, Travel often have people asking in Englis... (more) |

I assume you consider this localized, because I specified the US. I do not interpret "international site" as being a site where no location specific question is allowed. Virtually all home improvement questions are location specific, there are very few things that apply to every single country in the... (more) |

The question is not about language, but about the actual state of the home improvement market. Particularly, I am trying to ask what to search for, if I want to pay someone to redo the floors in my house. I know that it's probably *some type* of "contractor" or "handyman" but they like to specialize,... (more) |

I tagged with two proposals because it potentially fit both. If the proposals became a site, we would have to decide which one fits better. Feedback is welcome.
I am active with both of these proposal. This type of overlap is noted in https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/289770. IMO we should cont... (more) |

Question | — |
What type of contractor does flooring? If I'm looking to pay someone to replace my floors (eg. carpet, laminate, hardwood), what is this service called? Would I be looking for a contractor, handyman, floorer or something else? I am asking in the US. (more) |

I wasn't aware that outbound is enough! Maybe I'm thinking of an older version of the protocol they used.
Also, I recall that LE themselves said they do not recommend using it for internal servers, but I cannot find that on their site now. So perhaps I'm either confused or out of date. Based on th... (more) |

Question | — |
What happens to TLS name constraints when the client does not support them? I only have a working knowledge of TLS. TLS today supports name constraints, to restrict which domains a CA can issue certs for: https://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc5280#section-4.2.1.10 I've seen people claim that certain software doesn't support this feature: https://serverfault.com/questions/6... I want to use this for a server on a private LAN, so not public. I believe LE issues certs that expire after a month, and you must have a tool automatically renew them. For the tool to work, LE must access your machine, which requires an inbound path from the internet. In my case the server deliberat... (more) |

I do want this for "production". Maybe I should have mentioned this in the question (LMK if you think I should edit) but the goal is to have a server on my LAN, hosting various things like Nextcloud, not visible to the internet, but still have encrypted traffic and verification of the server. This is... (more) |

I think the straight up root CA doesn't really work. That approach would hinge in solving https://proposals.codidact.com/posts/290989. I don't even want to install the root CA myself on my client machines, because the attack surface is so huge (any domain). I certainly would feel icky asking family a... (more) |

With gnutls, there is a `nc_permit_dns` key which seems to do this. I can't find specific docs but https://www.gnutls.org/manual/html_node/certtool-Invocation.html mentions it. IIRC when I tried to use it for a root CA, I got an error that root CAs cannot be restricted with that field. But it seems t... (more) |

Question | — |
How to mitigate the risk of self-signed root CA? Since self-signed server certs are discouraged nowadays, often people create their own root CA and sign server certs with that. Obviously client apps won't trust the root CA, so the admin must then ask all users to install the root CA on their computer. With this, server certs signed by the root C... (more) |

Question | — |
Proper way to create your own TLS certificates What exactly are the steps to creating your own TLS certificates such that they create minimal error messages for users? For example, a simple self-signed certificate will trigger a lot of errors in many cases, and every time the certificate is rotated a new exception will need to be created. A... (more) |

I think the issue here is that this would relate to the mechanism of storing a representation rather than the salient idea. For example, you could claim that an mp4 of a horse running cannot be simplified due to the compression scheme, but actually I just did summarize it in words.
I think you are... (more) |

@#8049 Thanks for the link! As far as my comment, IMO if @#57337 is interested in discussing legal topics we should scrap the old proposal and create a new one. The issues I see with the old one:

I think this is an interesting idea.
I don't really care about it being LLM. Even with ChatGPT, what it normally outputs is usually poorly scoped garbage, so it would be a poor post even if it came from a human. You'd have to rewrite it anyway to be readable. And if you're going to rewrite, IMO do... (more) |

He obviously just copied the abstract from the paper. This is a common thing to do when sharing papers in a hurry over emails and such.
We probably don't want to just copy/paste the abstract here, which I've already mentioned in my initial comment. (more) |

Question | — |
What is the modern view on the Socratic method? Socrates was fond of engaging in philosophical discourse where he would simply ask questions and not make any statements or assertions. This created a situation where all the conclusions come from the "student" (though Socrates himself would likely state that he himself is no less a student). Of cour... (more) |

Question | — |
Can you summarize any explanation? When explaining a piece of knowledge, sometimes the explanation is short and simple and other times it is long and complex. Some people put the burden on the explainer, and demand that they make it shorter or more detailed, which implies the explainer chooses how long the explanation is to be. ... (more) |

Question | — |
Is Kant's categorical imperative applicable to Q&A sites like Codidact? On sites like Codidact, the question often arises about what rules should be imposed on user behavior. What is a good question? What is a good answer? What behaviors are desirable and which are not? The debates rage on for decades on this site and beyond, partly because all users have subtly differen... (more) |

Question | — |
What can I do with humans captured in pal spheres? I've discovered that I can capture syndicate thugs in pal spheres. I can then have them fight for me or work in my base like regular pals. Question | — |
Is there a consequence to catching humans in pal spheres? I've discovered that I can capture syndicate thugs in pal spheres. It appears that I can then summon them to fight for me or work in my base like other pals. The message when I capture says that "capturing humans in pal spheres is considered inhumane". But does this actually mean anything or is it... (more) |

A: How do you build a Fluffy Pal Bed? The fluffy pal bed does not require a specific pal, that's just the UI being janky. The tech is unlocked when your character reaches level 24. Then you have to buy it in the tech screen (press `T`) and build it like the other structures. (more) |

How do you build a Fluffy Pal Bed? To upgrade my base, I need to build 2 fluffy pal beds. However, in the tech tree, I can't find this building. Some techs are locked because "I haven't caught the right Pal yet", but which Pal do I need to catch for the fuzzy bed? (more) |

Question | — |
What's the deal with content farms? In the last 5-10 years, I've noticed that many searches (especially Google) about technical or semi-technical questions, have the results clogged with "content farm" results. It's hard to precisely define "content farm", but the Wikipedia article gives a good idea. Best I can do is say "if you've ... (more) |

Of course Google says their product is the best. But for years now Google results have been swamped by content farms, which contain articles on commonly searched topics which are very poorly written, but use the keywords and structure that an informative article would have.
I've often wondered if ... (more) |
